Happy First Birthday Prithivi

You Still Fit in My Hands

You still fit in my hands,
Like a seashell from the shore.
I can hold you,
Speak to you,
Hear all your adventures
When I put my ear to you.

You tell me all the gibberish that
I understand and don't understand at the same time.
Inside this big world is now a beautiful tiny world—
That is only ours.
Yours and mine.

I feel so happy that I got a baby boy doll.
Little girls all over the world don't know
How beautiful it is to have you.
They have been told that only little baby girls can be dolls—
You can make their hair and dress them up,
But how nice it would be if they could see that we can have them in
Baby Boy edition too.
If we can press his hands, his cheeks,
Hold and caress his chubby feet...
The mischief and the shyness are the same,
The instinct to hug me when you hear a loud voice—
That's the same.
The vulnerability and beauty are the same,
And I hope the boys grow up to be the same.
How nice it would be if our boys and girls knew
That as babies they were exactly the same—
So, so lovable, so fragile and adventurous, so full of hope and promise.

You are a few days away from being 1,
And your mama can still hug you tight and hold you close.
And you fit anywhere I try to fit you—
My lap, my palms, my chest, my pockets.

And as you turn one,
You laugh and show me—
"Mama, guess what? I can grow too."
And gradually you will grow bigger and bigger,
Like you have drunk the magic potion
From Alice in Wonderland
'Cause this world is a wonderland for you too.

And I will let you grow,
But I will hold you tight too.
And even if you become a giant,
And I become very small, like an ant,
I will say, "Hey, guess what?
You still fit in my hand. You still fit in my lap."
Because I will have all of mine to always offer you.

One day, you will spread
All over the world.
You will go to many forests and fantasy lands,
You will unlock the world's mysteries,
And become so big that I might just become a speck.
Maybe you will end up in a galaxy many, many light years away.

There is a planet there—T12381...
Maybe you will visit that planet,
Either as a traveller, or as a warrior,
Or best still, as a writer.
Maybe you will be lost there for a few days.

Remember, even there,
You will find all of me—
Holding you, embracing you,
Protecting you and whispering,
"You still fit in my hands.
You still fit in my heart
You still fit in my forever!"
