Listen to the mustn't

Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.

- Shel Silverstein

Top things we learnt from Louis Malle - Zazie dans le metro

"Being or nothing, that is the question. Ascending, descending, coming, going, a man does so much that in the end he disappears."

1) A man speaking and changing places - jump cuts a la michel gondry too
2) pan to a static object and jump cut to subjects reaching there repeatedly
3) When a character is speaking - the other character comes from all the directions. E.g in LS the two characters A is to the left and B is towards the right. Then we goto close up of B and find that A is on the right of him. And next instant A is towards the left of him.
4) People crowding a small space and moving our key character
5) Group of people talking to eachother - in a tight shot we pan from one new face to another and come to another new face.
6) When introducing a new location - a group of characters are doing a to and fro activity and creating a rhythm
7) Exagggerating the backdrop by using a green screen.
8) shots from extreme perspectives - much below and much above
9) Close of a man but not frontal but rear or anything eelse

Also check Mack Sennett and Buster Keaton.

Design and perfection

It was important, his father said, to craft the backs of cabinets and fences properly, even though they were hidden. "He loved doing things right. He even cared about the look of the parts you couldn't see."

--Steve Jobs recalls a lesson that his father implanted deeply in him ; his very first lesson in design.

grit

Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Having growth mindset is critical to having grit.
Know that the ability to learn is not fixed, that it can change with your effort. Failure is never permanent.
