Design and perfection

It was important, his father said, to craft the backs of cabinets and fences properly, even though they were hidden. "He loved doing things right. He even cared about the look of the parts you couldn't see."

--Steve Jobs recalls a lesson that his father implanted deeply in him ; his very first lesson in design.

grit

Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Having growth mindset is critical to having grit.
Know that the ability to learn is not fixed, that it can change with your effort. Failure is never permanent.

There are three sides to every argument

"We tend to see conflict as two-sided: labor versus management, husband versus wife, or Republicans versus Democrats. And what we frequently fail to see is there is always a third side: it's us, the surrounding community, the friends, allies, family members, neighbors. When I returned to my work in South Africa after being with the San Bushmen, I saw with new eyes the third side in the bitter and violent conflict dividing that country. Business leaders, religious leaders, labor unions, women's groups — in other words, the community — were working to transform the conflict. Nelson Mandela himself could be understood not just as a leader of one side, but as a third-side leader who also stood for the whole, who was fighting, as he expressed it so eloquently, for the freedom of the whites as well as the blacks. From the outside, the political transformation in South Africa seemed almost miraculous. Everyone was expecting bloodshed to continue forever, and the secret was the activation of the third side."

Notes on acting

1) Ask actor to have a fixed gaze - not move eyeballs, not be shifty, not blink
2) voice should be of loudness that camera can hear else it looks fake
3) If people see actor rehearsing and feel he is rehearsing then its fake
4) Actor should know that they have no enemies - everyone is on their side
5) In master if you fiddle (or smoke) with something - remember what points yo hare fiddling with
6) Movie acting is operation with laser - it is very tiny
7) You cannot bluff the camera
8) Ignore audience and people around - just make everything else disappear
9) If you are talking to camera - think that it is one person
10) Do the performance exactly the way you gonna do the night before...rearrange furniture
11) Hardest thing to do is be a one day actor coz you feel like an outsider
12) Everyone is there to get the greatest performance from you because it is bloody difficult and everyone knows it
13) Get action scene demonstrated to the actor once always
14) Acting is reacting - if u start getting that right its most imp. Practice meditation.. Ignoring necessary thoughts in your mind.
15) Keep an open mind, develop emotional sensitivity
16) Preparation is very important
17) Stay focussed - and be accepting  but stay focussed
18) Never judge people see at some point when you f up (invariably you might) you want them to root for you
19) Be completely present in the moment
20) Enrich your life - do strange things - challenge yourself
21) Never define yourself by how you look
22) Do if you enjoy and you love it

What works for Indian audience

Punha is about muhallas, about drawing rooms and chutney sandwiches in parties. Extra characters like alka and anuj give that sense of overflowing life. This is like a nukkad or raju ban gaya gentleman or jo jeeta where side characters build the world. Especially for the milleu these characters grow up in.
Sometimes I feel that difference between an indie film and a film film (Bollywood) is how empty the former feels. I feel Indian audience and even kids (animation films) goto theatre to engage with a world and its surpluses rather than just a sharp story. That's what I feel.
